For our May Zero Waste challenge, we can partake in Meatless Mondays. By acknowledging the detrimental environmental, physical, economical, humane, and wasteful repercusions of the commercial meat, dairy and fish industries, we can can better understand the waste that we help generate and start to reduce our participation in this industry. As always, being mindful and aware and educating ourselves is the first step.
You might choose to give up meat on Mondays (or any day of the week that will make it easier for you to stick with!). Or maybe you already don’t eat meat and you can give up fish, or dairy, or eggs…. etc… Perhaps you have already stopped eating all that, but you can give up almonds to help bees and conserve water waste. Perhaps you can make your own vegan cheeses instead of buying them in plastic. Perhaps you can go beyond Mondays and give up whatever you choose for the weekend or the month.
Another good step, as well as giving up some items a few days a month, would be to only get your meat, dairy, or fish from local purvayors and merchants. Explore your local farmers, fishers, and get closer to the source of your food.
Have you ever done meatless Mondays, or some other meatless challenges? What were your experiences?
