A Bloggish Problem

I seem to have a reoccurring bloggish problem. Each month, towards the end of the month (sometimes even in the middle), I get off track with blog posts and It becomes very hard to get back on track. I out this up to a few issues: I have been busy trying to get on a schedule for my booktube (which is not more important to me than I blog but a bit more exciting at the moment), and then there is just life and productivity in general. Putting my efforts to making videos has left me with less inspiration (not to mention time) for writing. Life generally is always in flux, it seems.

Each month, I try to buck this growing trend and keep on track. The beginning of the month is always easier for me. I have lots of idea, as well as regular series that are easy to accomplish. I love my regular series but it’s important for me that the blog isn’t just those posts. That being said, if that’s all I can muster, it’s better than nothing.

So here we are at the end of another month where, going into the next, I have fallen off with blog posts. My notes books and drafts are full, but very little writing is getting done. On the horizon is my beginning of the month line up, and I feel good about it as usual. I see several weeks of content lined up and accessible for me to write. I love it. So As with each of the last few months, I will try to start strong and keep the momentum going for April.

How do you combat writing fatigue? Over come over or under-inspiration? Get around writer’s block? Stacy on schedule with creative endeavors without letting them becomes tedious?

Until I find the answers to these as well as many other questions, I’ll just keep trying.

Something To Try: Morning Pages

In late 2019 and early 2020, I tried Morning Pages. I know a lot of people swear by these quickly written pages, done first thing in the morning. They are 3 or more pages of pure stream of conciousness writing to clear or organize the mind. Orginated by Julie Cameron in the book The Artist’s Way, Morning pages are meant to be quickly written and then never really looked at again. More a form of meditaion and creative jump start than a journal of thoughts and ideas. Many of the productivity experts I follow think they are part of the key to suceess. So I tried them.

But not having read the book and not having any real clear goal with them, I didn’t really “follow the rules” and I didn’t really keep up with them. Now, in 2021, I am reading The Artist’s Way and I’m giving them another try!

The idea of Morning Pages is extremely simple but people swear by the results. They say productivity and creativity soar after incorporating this daily practice. I’m interested to take this experiment a bit more seriously this go around and see what happens.

Have you utilized this tool? What are your thoughts?

Life Admin Day 11/25/2020

Well, it’s been a long time since I have had a proper LAD and I need one! A Life Admin Day is a day (or a few hours of a day or a few hours over a few days) set aside to get your sh*t together and complete some annoying but necessary life tasks.

IMG_4466.JPG

Here’s what’s on my itinarary for today:
Marty pills (6am)
Marty surgery (8am)
Visit Gus (cat sitting)
Call my car insurance and sort out car
Call DMV if needed
Pay Bills
Look into eye doc bill from 2018
Find razor blades
Find doc, make appointment (me + chris)
Afternoon walk
Clean out fridge
Make soup
Film

Some of the things on my list are fuin, but most of them are things that I just need to get done. Many of these things are things that I HAVE to get done by the end of the year. I’ve known about them for a long time, but keep putting them off. Surprise, surprise it’s almmost the end of the year and I’m running out of time!

I often add these big tasks to my LAD list and also my more mundane tasks that I also need to get done that day. Sometimes breaking up the big tasks with more routine projects breaks up the bigger list and makes it feel more doable. LAD tasks are also sometimes things that can’t be totally finished in one day, so adding things like doing the dishes, etc… help me feel like I got a lot accomplished.

What are some projects, tasks and to-do items that you have been putting off in 2020? What do you need to finish by 2021?

~edit~ Editing Mo, jumping in here to say that this Life Admin Day was a total bust! Nothing in my day went the way I was planning and I was only able to cross off 3 or 4 tasks. This is why I often set my LADs up to have two days in a row to complete my goals. This time I’m not able to do that bc of the holiday. While this is terribly unsatisfying, it is a good lesson to not procrastinate and/or set up more regular Life Admin Days in order to complete all those pesky life tasks.

Bullet Journal Check In | August - What I Track and Why

The other day, I saw a friends habit tracker on Instagram and they requested to see mine. When they did, they were surprised! I was tracking so many things!!

When I first started bullet journalling, my tracker was only a handful of things, now it’s up to about 50.

I think my friend used thier habit tracker to keep them motivated for certain tasks, and I use mine that way, too. But I mostly use it to track my habits. I like to see what days I do what things, how often I do those things. I like to see what weeks or months I do which of the things I track. Sometimes I want to build a habit so I put it on my tracker to inspire me. My habit tracker changes seasonally. Summers I track swimming, Winters I might track something else. Some tasks I would do whether they were on the tracker or not. Some I very rarely do. I Like to look back over the month to take note of all this info.

IMG_2332.jpg

Recently I’ve tried to put all the action items I want for my morning routine in one spot on my habit tracker. This way I can see if I do each item every day. I like how this has been working. Sometimes checking the habit tracker reminds me of some part of my morning routine and I set out to do it before I forget. Sometimes I don’t end up doing it in the morning, but later in the day instead.

Occasionally these are things that I will kick off my tracker if I see that I’m consistently not doing them. Sometimes I take things off bc I don’t feel the need to track them any more.

More often I think of things I might like to add to my tracker. But unless I drop other items, I’m just about out of room!

Do you use your tracker to keep you motivated? Do you track only things you do with consistency? Do you change your habit tracker each month or always track the same items year in and year out?

Lady Celestina's Book Reading Method

My friend, Lady Celestina, reads a lot of books. When I asked them how they did it, they let me in on thier special method. It’s quite simple, really, but I was excited to try it, especialy bc I have more time to read than in many years. After using this method since the end of March, I can say that this totally works! I’ve read 8 books in about 7 weeks as of writing this.

IMG_0185.jpg

Lady Celestina’s method has more to do with commitment and a mindset change than it does with an elaborate trick.

Simply, take the total number of pages of your book, divide by the number of days in which you want to read it (7 is suggested), and read that amount each night rounding up to the nearest chapter or page break.

Super easy, right? But if you stick with it, it gives you the right motivation to get thru books super quickly while being attentive and engaged. My previous problem was that I would read only a few paragraphs or pages at a time. I thought any reading was better than none. Reading so little never gave me enough to sink my teeth into. I was easily distracted, and would put the book down right away. Once I was on to The Lady’s trick, once I committed to trying it and using it, it allowed me to really get into each session and often times I would read more than the allotted number of pages. Having a method to rely on, I found it easier to put away distractions. I would highly recommend Lady Celestina’s Method for anyone trying to read more productively!

Do you have any tricks for reading?
